Leprechauns and Gnomes Statues
Gnomes: The depiction of gnomes has changed quite often over the years and remained different in different cultures. Originally many of them were conceived of as ugly, ground dwelling creatures that were less humanoid than the gnomes of today. In fact, they were more akin to small goblins and disfigured faeries, and acted more like animals than human beings. In contrast, modern sources often depict gnomes as diminutive, stout humanoids who wear tall, pointed conical caps and dress in solid colors such as blue, red, or green; in this depiction, the male gnome always has a long white beard. They have the intelligence of a human (are sometimes thought to be wiser), and have human-like personalities. While their appearances may differ, the older and newer traditions do share a similar belief in gnomes' capabilities: They are said to move as easily through the earth as humans walk upon it, and the sun's rays turn them into stone. They are incredibly strong and fast, and said to possess almost supernatural abilities in the manipulation of natural material (although they also are said to fiercely guard against any unnecessary damage to the earth and wildlife). How to catch a Leprechaun:
If you get lucky and manage to catch a leprechaun, keep your wits about you because getting tricked is easy and can have damaging result. Never take your eye off him or he will vanish.
A captured leprechaun will grant you three wishes or a gold coin to bribe his way to freedom. This is when things can go terribly wrong if the wrong decisions are made.

Many an Irish man who thought he could out smart an Irish leprechaun had selected the three wishes and would either go insane trying to think of what to wish for or their wishes would back fire.

One common story was of Seamus in County Mayo who wished to be the richest man on a tropical island. When his wish came true he suddenly realized there were no shops or pubs on the island to spend his money at or even people to talk with. Unfortunately Seamus became bored after a few hours on the Island and had to waste his third wish to return to Ireland. This could be how the phrase luck of the Irish originated.

One of the biggest tips an Irish person can give anyone is to never listen to what the Irish leprechaun says, no matter what. The leprechauns are great mind players and will say anything to confuse you into making the wrong wishes. Although they are smart they can be fooled.

Irish leprechauns are devious little creatures and will do anything to escape from man so they should never be trusted. Some say angry leprechauns are more common than friendly ones but this is very untrue. Irish leprechauns are very friendly but tend to dislike humans who always seem to chase them for wishes and pots of gold.

If you ever spot a leprechaun you may be better off to pass him by without taking notice. You can end up in more trouble than its worth if you decide to chase them as the people of Ireland know too well. Unfortunately, with cities in Ireland expanding, the poor wee leprechauns are being driven further underground away from man, taking their rainbows with them.
